WDS (Windows Deployment Service) or
RIS(Remote Installation Service)
WDS is available in Windows server 2000, 2003, 2008, 2008
R2, 2012 and 2012 R2. WDS is use for remote installation of windows operating
system. It can be use in the domain not in the workgroup. It is use for fresh
setup like new branch office where client machine have blank hard disk.
We can deploy Windows Server 2003, 2008, 2012, windows
2000 professional, windows XP, windows Vista, windows7, windows 8 etc.
Requirement for WDS
on server side :-
1. Active Directory domain
2. DNS
3. DHCP
4. Windows 8 client CD to create image
5. Blank partition to create image (it must not be system
partition but data can be store)
6. WDS
7. Wired or Wireless connection with remote client
machine in LAN
Requirements for
WDS on client end :-
1. Blank hard disk drive without any partition
2. PXE (Pre-Executable Environment) LAN card or Wakeup
LAN It is special LAN card
which can start
working without any OS.
WDS Protocol :-
1. BINL (Boot Information Negotiation Layer) It is backbone of WDS, it is use to respond
the PXE client request.
2. SIS (Single Instance Store) It create duplicate copy of image for each
client machine.
3. TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol) It can start CIW (Client Installation Wizard) and image
start downloading on remote client machine.
WDS Process :-
Client machine will start and broadcast its MAC address
in the entire network, it will discover the DHCP server. DHCP server will
assign IP address and also join computer in the domain. DNS is use for
communication. AD domain policies will be applied and WDS will send image for
the remote client machine.
Practical :-
step1 Fulfill all
the requirements
step2 Install WDS
from Server Manager Roles
step3 Open
Administrative tools -> WDS -> Configure Server
step4 Create
Install image and Boot image
step5 AD users and
computers -> Domain name -> Rt. click -> Delegate control ->
Add -> Administrator -> Join computer to the domain -> OK
step6 Switch on
client machine and Enable Boot from Network
step7 Press F12 to
boot from network and give username
