Disaster Recovery
Backup and Restore
Backup means to copy data for future purpose. It use for
fault tolerance of data. Data will never compress during the backup process.
Backup is faster than copy-paste and format will change ( *.bkf
or *.vhd )
We can take backup through network but local backup is
recommended.
We can take backup of particular file, folder and
partition.
We can also take
backup of SSD (System State Data).
Types of backup
1. Normal or Full backup
2. Incremental backup
NOTE: Archive
attribute is use by OS and it is for backup purpose only.
1. Full
backup means backup of all the selected files either backedup or not and it
will be markup after the backup is done.
2. Incremental backup means backup of only the latest data
which is ready for backup. After backup it will
be markup.
NOTE:
In windows 2003 and older versions ,
there are 5 types of backup :-
1. Normal or Full
2. Copy
3. Daily
4. Incremental
5. Differential
NOTE:
In Windows
2008 and higher versions :-
1. We have to install
Windows Server Backup Feature
2. Backup cannot be done
within same partition.
3. Tape drives are not
supported by default.
SSD (System State Data)
SSD is collection of the following items :-
1. Registry or OS configuration
2. Boot Files like ntldr, bootmgr etc.
3. Class Registration Database like COM, DCOM etc.
4. Certificate Service, if installed
5. Active directory database or ntds.dit (if it is DC)
6. Sysvol folder or security templates (if it is DC)
NOTE: SSD is important because it is use to take
backup of AD
If we want to take backup of particular object like an
OU, then we have to take backup of SSD.
To take backup of SSD :-
Open backup wizard
-> Select SSD -> Give
destination to store backup file
We can take incremental backup afterwards.
If particular object like user, OU etc, is deleted or if
entire AD is corrupt, then we have to restore SSD.
To restore SSD on DC
:
Restart DC ->
Press F8 -> Directory Service
Restore Mode (only for DC) -> -> Logon as Administrator with DSRM mode password -> Open Backup wizard and restore
SSD ( Authoritative or Non-
Authoritative Restore
) -> Restart
NOTE:
Non-Authoritative restore means other DC will overwrite
database of this DC after restore.
Authoritative restore means this DC will have more
priority and it will overwrite database of other DCs, actually its PVN will
increase to 100,000
NOTE:
We can use AD
Recycle Bin and LDP.exe in
Windows 2008 and Windows 2012 to restore single object like single OU or single
User.
